Department of Science and Environment, Roskilde University, invites applications for a position as assistant/associate professor of Medical Biology from September 1 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position as assistant professor is limited to 4 years while the associate professor position is permanent. Department of Science and Environment is one of four departments at Roskilde University. The department conducts basic and applied research within medical biology, molecular biology, environmental sciences, chemistry, physics and mathematics. Bachelor and master programs are offered within the same areas.

The department is organized into four research groups: Medical & Molecular Biology, Environmental Dynamics, Mathematics & Physics and Chemistry. We strive to work interdisciplinary within the department, within the main areas at Roskilde University and in close and open-minded collaboration with private companies, public institutions, hospitals and universities and NGOs.

The Medical & Molecular Biology group conducts research and teaches in basic molecular biology topics often combined with a biomedical or application-oriented angle. The research group works in both eukaryotic and prokaryotic organisms and uses a variety of molecular biological and biochemical techniques, such as advanced microscopy, expression analysis, genomics techniques, protein characterization, culturing and analysis of cancer and stem cells, and gene editing.

Responsibilities and tasks:
The assistant/associate professor’s duties will primarily include research, including obligations with regard to publication/scientific communication and research-based teaching with associated examination obligations within medical biology. In addition to research and research-based teaching, the post also includes a duty to share knowledge with the rest of society.

An assistant professor is also expected to complete the educational training programme for assistant professors at RUC (up to 220 hours).

An associate professor’s duties may also include performance of research management, educational guidance and supervision of assistant professors as well as academic assessment work. The duties will include developing the field of research by establishing and provide external funding for a research group.

The successful candidate to the position is expected to undertake research and research-based teaching within medical biology within the areas described under Qualifications.

Qualifications:
Applicants must hold a PhD degree within biology, biochemistry, biomedicine or medicine. Qualifications within one or more of the following scientific areas are preferred:

  • Microbiome research related to human health
  • Bacteria-host interactions in human
  • Meta-genomics
  • Molecular microbiology
  • Microbial genetics

Exclusively for associate professor:

  • Documented research and teaching qualifications corresponding to what can be achieved through satisfactory appointment as an assistant professor in relation to the above subject area(s).

Both assistant and associate professors are also required to be enterprising and to possess good interpersonal skills and to be a visible, active participant in the department’s daily activities, in addition to being willing to engage in disciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration across the department.

Assessment:

In the assessment of candidates for a position as assistant professor consideration will be given to:

  • research topic,
  • scientific production,
  • research potential and the ability to promote and utilize research results,
  • experience in teaching and education and interest in or experience with project-based teaching,
  • other academic experience e.g. from organising research conferences or seminars,
  • ability to contribute to development of the department’s internal and external cooperation,

In the assessment of candidates for a position as associate professor consideration will be given to:

  • research topic,
  • scientific production beyond the contribution from the PhD,
  • research potential and the ability to promote and utilize research results,
  • experience in teaching and education development and management and interest in or experience with project-based teaching,
  • an all-round academic experience basis, preferably including international academic experience, e.g. from reviewing or editing academic papers or from organising research conferences or seminars,
  • ability to contribute to the development of the department’s internal and external cooperation,
