A unique opportunity is available in the research group of Associate Prof. Kaare H. Jensen at the Department of Physics, Technical University of Denmark.

We are offering a post-doctoral research position taking part in the development of new biomimetic systems with a prime focus on elucidating the biophysics of vascular transport in plants.

Photosynthetic green plants feed our planet, and sugars made in leaves are transported through phloem conduits to fill our primary food sources including roots and fruits. A critical step in phloem function - with an enormous impact on humans - is the sugar loading process. Recent major efforts to increase photosynthetic capacity are strongly dependent on our ability to modify this mechanism, because photosynthesis is down-regulated when production exceeds export. Yet our biophysical understanding of how sugars enter the phloem and what controls allocation to specific sinks is rudimentary at best.

The project will be hosted by the section for Biophysics and Fluids at DTU Physics and is part of a research project funded by the VILLUM Foundation.

Responsibilities and tasks
The post-doctoral project aims at understanding and mimicking the sugar transport strategies used by plants. Through a biomimetic approach involving a combination of experiments and theory, the researcher will ultimately identify the dominant physical mechanisms that influence the efficiency of sugar transport. The goal is to advance our fundamental understanding of sugar transport in plants, and to develop a completely new type of biologically inspired reactor for biofuel production.

The successful candidate will play a key role in maturing biomimetic technology in tight collaboration with biology researchers at Harvard University, Cornell University, UC Davis and Washington State University.

Candidates should have

  • A Master's degree in either physics, engineering, biology, or bio-engineering
  • A PhD in Science or in Engineering
  • Experience with biomechanics, plant biology, experimental microscale fluid dynamics and standard experimental techniques (e.g. soft lithography), physical and/or biophysical modeling and fluid mechanics

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union. The period of employment is 2 years.

The start date is 15 August 2017 (a later starting date can be negotiated).
