PhD position on Nano-Photonic Devices for Optical Communication

Today’s communication infrastructure is facing serious scalability and energy consumption issues and it will be unsustainable in a not too distant future if there are no changes in energy consumption trends. The adoption of nano-photonic devices and particularly nano-laser structures can potentially enable dramatic changes to fundamental working principles and power budgets of optical data transmitters.

The research center NATEC (NAnophotonics for TErabit Communications) is exploring novel nano-photonic devices for optical communication. In particular, a novel laser structure based on the Fano resonance in a nano-cavity is showing extremely attractive properties in terms of modulation speed and power efficiency. The topic of this PhD project is to investigate the applications of the Fano laser and other nano-photonic structures to optical communication systems. The Fano laser and its application in optical communication is a very novel research topic, leaving ample opportunity for this Ph.D. project to significantly push the state-of-the-art of research in the field.

Description of PhD project
The Ph.D. project will be carried out in close collaboration between the High Speed Optical Communications group (HSOC) and the Nanophotonics Theory and Signal Processing group both at the Department of Photonic Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark. Both groups are at the very forefront of international research in their respective fields and will provide a strong platform for the successful execution of the project. There is access to state-of-the-art characterization and fabrication facilities. The department is highly international and encourages collaborative work and an informal working environment.

Qualifications
This Ph.D. position will be part of the NATEC Centre and will investigate:

  • Initial characterization and validation of Fano lasers for optical communication systems
  • Design input to the development of improved structures targeting high output power and large modulation bandwidth
  • Characterization and demonstration of Fano laser in full communication systems including evaluation of their applicability to various areas of optical communication (on-chip signaling, short range interconnects, long range links etc.)

As part of the Danish Ph.D. program the student will follow a number of Ph.D. courses as well as take part in teaching. Furthermore, there will be the opportunity to carry out a longer external research stay. We have close collaborations with numerous internationally leading universities and research organizations.

Approval and Enrolment

The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students. The period of employment is 3 years.
