PhD Research Fellowship in Biological Soft Matter - "Mechanism of Antimicrobial Peptides seen by Neutron Scattering"

The PhD scholar must complete the studies in accordance with the current regulations for the PhD program, currently the Ministerial Order of 27 August 2013 on the PhD Program at the Universities. The PhD scholar will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Department of Science and Environment at Roskilde University.

Job/ project description:
We offer a PhD position in Biological Soft Matter/Physical Chemistry in the Bioactive Peptide group of Håvard Jenssen at the Department of Science and Environment – Roskilde University.

Antimicrobial peptides and peptoidomimetic compounds such as peptoids, are promising candidates to fight resistant bacteria. However, their mechanism is not understood in detail and issues such as toxicity and sensitivity towards proteolytic degradation limit their practical applications. The project aims to understand the fundamental biophysical mechanism of antimicrobial peptides and petidomimetics so as to be better able to modify and design new effective antimicrobial agents.

The candidate design and synthesis peptides and peptiomimetics, perform systematic studies of the interactions between model biomembranes (liposomes, supported bilayers) and antimicrobial peptides and investigate their effect on structure, dynamics and transport using manly X-ray and neutron scattering techniques. The main methods will be small angle neutron/X-ray scattering (SAXS/SANS), neutron/X-ray reflectometry including advanced data modeling. Complementary techniques are mainly light scattering, single ion conductivity (BLM) and calorimetry.

The PhD work will be done in close collaboration with University of Copenhagen, University of Oslo and Malmö University, the two latter will be responsible for coordinating the reflectometry work.

Applicants must hold a MSc degree in relevant fields of chemistry, pharmacy or physics, with practical experience in peptide or peptidomimetic synthesis, preferably also with experience from the fields of physical chemistry, biophysics, soft matter science or similar. Furthermore a good command of English is required.

The Department of Science and Environment has a strategic ambition of being a leading research department. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials. The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.

Applications will be treated in accordance with current rules about employment in teaching and research positions at Danish universities. Terms of appointment and salary will be according to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations.

Candidates without a Master's degree have until July 1st, 2017 to complete the final exam.
