The Section for Proton Conductors at DTU Energy is seeking a qualified and highly motivated candidate for a PhD scholarship in development of catalysts and electrodes for fuel cells and electrolyzers.The section is involved in the development of both fuel cells and electrolyzers in the temperature range 60–300 °C. Within fuel cells based on phosphoric acid doped polybenzimidazole, we are among the leading research groups in the world. Alkaline electrolysis is a more recent field under expansion within the group. The research approach is experimental. The research and development activities take place in close collaboration with industry, e.g. Danish Power Systems, EWII Fuel Cells and GreenHydrogen. Furthermore, there is a comprehensive collaboration with other companies and universities all over the world.

You will be joining a large group consisting of +20 scientists and technicians. You will be working in modern, well-equipped laboratories in a truly international setting where approximately half of the staff is from outside Denmark.

Responsibilities and tasks
The scholarship will focus on synthesis and electrochemical characterization of catalysts and electrodes. It may be divided into two separate scholarships on catalysts and electrodes respectively, depending on the candidates. The research tasks are:

  • Development of electrocatalysts for low temperature fuel cells and electrolyzers. Special attention to either platinum alloys or non-noble metal catalysts.
  • Development of electrode structures for alkaline electrolyzer cells.
  • Electrochemical characterization.

The scholarship(s) involve an external stay. In case of the electrode study, it will be an extended period at Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).

Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.
