Assistant/Associate Professor in physical geography with a focus on climate and climate change

Department of Science and Environment, Roskilde University, invites applications for a position as assistant/associate professor in physical geography with specialization within climate, climate change and climate change impacts on ecosystems. The position is open from 1 August 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position will be part of the Section for Environmental Dynamics. The section comprises at the moment eight professors and associate professors as well as a varying number of PhD-students, post.docs., technicians etc. The current members of the group primarily have a background within aquatic ecology and ecotoxicology. Your contribution will be to strengthen the research and teaching of the group within the field climate change and climate change impacts, especially on the ecosystem level. We are looking for a person with a quantitative approach, based in natural science. Additional competences within e.g. terrestrial ecology and the integration between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems is considered an advantage.

Responsibilities and tasks
The assistant professor’s work will include research, including obligations with regard to publication/scientific communication and research-based teaching with associated examination obligations. Your teaching will be focused on the Natural Science Bachelor Program as well as on the master programs in Environmental Risk and to a certain extent Geography (in the Department of People and Technology) and will consist of teaching courses and giving supervision within subjects such as climate, landscape dynamics, geology and natural hazards.

In addition to research and research-based teaching, the position also requires share of knowledge with the rest of society – including participation in public debate. To a limited extent, this may also include performance of other activities.

An assistant professor is also expected to complete the educational training programme for assistant professors at RUC (up to 220 hours).

An associate professor’s tasks will also include research management, educational guidance and supervision of assistant professors as well as academic assessment work. You will also be expected to secure external research funding.

We expect that you will become an integrated part of the section of Environmental Dynamics, and that you over time will establish a collaboration with the other members of the group.

Qualifications
Required qualifications

Applicants must hold a PhD degree or equivalent within physical geography. Qualifications within the following scientific areas are required:

  • Research and teaching qualifications within climate, climate change and climate change impacts, especially on the ecosystems level.
  • Proficiency in GIS and the use of geodata.
  • A documented quantitative approach, based in the natural sciences.

Additional qualifications

In addition to the overall focus on climate and climate change, it will be seen as an advantage if you can also contribute research and teaching wise within one or more of these areas:

  • Ecohydrology and the integration between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems
  • Terrestrial ecology / agro-ecology
  • Environmental management and – monitoring
  • Biodiversity
  • Human / environment interactions

Exclusively for associate professor:

  • Documented research and teaching qualifications corresponding to what can be achieved through satisfactory appointment as an assistant professor in relation to the above subject area(s).

Both assistant and associate professors shall be enterprising, possess good communication skills, and be a visible, involved participant in the department’s daily activities, in addition to being willing to engage in disciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration across the department.

Assessment
In the assessment of candidates for at position as assistant professor consideration will be given to;

  • research topic,
  • scientific production,
  • research prospective and the ability to promote and utilize research results,
  • experience in teaching and education,
  • other academic experience e.g. from organising research conferences or seminars,
  • ability to contribute to development of the department’s internal and external cooperation,
  • proven record of interdisciplinary collaboration

In the assessment of candidates for a position as associate professor consideration will be given to;

  • research topic,
  • scientific production beyond the contribution from the PhD,
  • research prospective and the ability to promote and utilize research results,
  • experience in teaching and education development and management,
  • basis academic experience, preferably including international academic experience, e.g. from reviewing or editing academic papers and/or from organizing research conferences or seminars,
  • ability to contribute to the development of the department’s internal and external cooperation,
  • proven record of interdisciplinary collaboration
  • a track record to attract external funding and manage research projects

Please note that assessment for associate professor position requires a positive formal evaluation of teaching qualification and documentation of supervision and pedagogical training.

Terms of employment
The employment is on full time, 37 hours per week, and you will refer to Head of Department Susanne Sørensen.

The position will be filled according to the Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) and Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities.

Shortly after the application deadline all applicants will be notified whether or not their application has been selected for assessment.

The shortlisted applicants will be informed about the composition of the assessment committee, and each applicant will be given the opportunity to comment on the composition of the committee and - later on - their assessment.
