Would you like to join our team on an ambitious project about introducing virtual learning technologies in a biotechnology and biological production bachelor program?
Roskilde University (RUC) is looking to recruit three assistant professors who will undertake research within areas related to biotechnology and/or biological production at Department of Science and Environment. The positions are part of the university's project on virtual learning technologies in science education. The project concerns integrating 3D and VR simulations and other digital learning technologies in science education programs and establishing a research and development environment around 3D and VR simulations in these programs. The positions are open from 1 October or as soon as possible thereafter and limited to 3 years.

About Department of Science and Environment
Department of Science and Environment is one of four departments at Roskilde University. The department conducts basic and applied research within medicinal biology, molecular biology, environmental sciences, chemistry, physics and mathematics. Bachelor and master programs are offered within the same areas.

The department is organized in four sections: molecular & medical biology, environmental dynamics, chemistry and mathematics & physics. The new assistant professors will be affiliated with one of the sections.

The Section for Environmental Dynamics covers a range of topics within ecology, ecophysiology, and ecotoxicology, especially within aquatic systems and organisms, as well as physical geography. Biological production, based on novel organisms and production systems, is a prioritized research area for the group. Research has focused on the use of zooplankton in aquaculture feed as well as on the use of microalgal biomass for feed, food and other uses, but the group is interested in broadening this field of research.

Research in the Chemistry Section covers a range of topics under the common theme green chemistry. The work is mostly conducted in collaboration with external partners and uses fundamental methods and theories from e.g. physical- and organic chemistry in research projects with applied aspects. Several of these projects are within the area of biotechnology and some examples include design of industrial enzymes, drug delivery systems and the physical stability of biomolecules. The section aims to strengthen its profile within mass spectrometry for detection of protein interactions..

The Molecular and Medical Biology Section conducts research and teaches in molecular biology often combined with a biomedical or application-oriented angle. The research group works in both eukaryotic and prokaryotic organisms and uses a variety of molecular biological and biochemical techniques, such as advanced microscopy, expression analysis, genomics techniques, protein characterization, culturing and analysis of cancer and stem cells and gene editing.


Responsibilities and tasks The assistant professors’ work will primarily include research, including obligations with regard to publication/scientific communication, and research-based teaching with associated examination obligations within one or more of the fields described below. A specific task within the research-based teaching comprises integration of new technologies in science education including 3D and VR simulations as part of a dedicated team across the department. Research obligations related to learning outcome and didactics are expected to comprise 10% of the duties in the positions in collaboration with didactical researchers. In addition to research and research-based teaching, the position also requires share of knowledge with the rest of society – including participation in public debate. The ideal candidates are expected to complete the educational training program for assistant professors at RUC (up to 220 hours).

We expect the candidates to become integrated in one of the existing sections at the Department.

The successful candidates are expected to:

  • Develop methods to introduce new technologies in science educations adapted to RUC's learning model
  • Participate in development of research based introduction of VR in science teaching
  • Participate in and supervise problem oriented student projects, as well as conduct lecture and/or laboratory based teaching
  • Perform basic and/or applied research within biotechnology or biological products

Applicants must hold a PhD degree or equivalent within a field relevant for the position, e.g. within biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, biomedicine, environmental chemistry, chemistry, analytical chemistry, environmental science or biological production

The successful candidates should have documented competencies within two or more of the subject areas:

  • Cellular and organismal physiology and metabolism (bacteria and mammalian, microalgae, fungi, zooplankton, insects or seaweeds).
  • Bacterial and eukaryotic expression systems and production of bioactive or bioregulatory molecules
  • Cultivation of bacteria, eukaryotic cells or simple animal models (fermentation, cell factories, photobioreactors etc.), including upscaling, optimization and modelling of cultivation.
  • Molecular biology techniques, “omics”, synthetic biology and/or genetic engineering.
  • Advanced microscopy and visualization of molecules, chemical reactions and/or cellular processes
  • Application of mass spectrometry within bioscience with specific focus on protein interactions
  • Quantification and characterization of RNA, DNA, metabolites or proteins/enzymes
  • Analysis and interpretation of complex biological data; bioinformatics

The ideal candidates shall be enterprising, possess good communication skills, and be visible involved participants in the department’s daily activities, in addition to being willing to engage in disciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration across the department.

Assessment In the assessment of the candidates, consideration will be given to;

  • research topic,
  • scientific production,
  • research prospective and the ability to promote and utilize research results,
  • experience in teaching and education, and interest in digital learning technologies,
  • ·other academic experience e.g.from organizing research conferences or seminars,
  • ability to contribute to development of the department’s internal and external cooperation,
  • good written and oral English skills

Terms of employment The positions are 3-year fixed-duration employments. The employments are full-time (37 hours per week) and the successful candidates will refer to a relevant Head of Section.

The position will be filled according to the Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) and Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities.
