Department of Social Sciences and Business (ISE), Roskilde University, invites applications for one or two positions as Professors in Social Studies within the fields of ‘childhood and youth’ and ‘care and gender’ from January 1 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.

In announcing a Professorship in Social Studies, ISE wishes to strengthen its social science research and teaching in ‘childhood and youth’ as it pertains to a range of contexts, e.g. social work, citizenship, and/or ethics as well as in ‘care and gender’ as it pertains to a range of contexts, e.g. welfare regimes, governance, and/or gender studies. Candidates must have made an original and significant contribution either to childhood and youth studies in areas of sociology and other disciplines, or to care and gender studies in areas of political science and/or sociology.

ISE conducts interdisciplinary, collaborative and socially engaged research based on political science, economics, anthropology, business studies, sociology, legal studies, and development studies. It is an innovative and interdisciplinary university environment characterized by academic and methodological diversity in research and education. The department’s researchers put emphasis on research methodologies and they share a commitment to understanding society and businesses in diverse contexts of change and global engagement. We produce research at the highest international level that feeds into our educational programmes, while simultaneously leveraging our research to impact social, economic and political change. Research in the department is organised in research groups. The successful candidate is expected to work closely with for instance sociologists, political scientists, anthropologists, and economists in one of these groups. Responsibilities and tasks
The professor is expected to maintain a significant own record of publications as well as to make an important contribution to the research culture in the department. The professor’s work primarily includes research and research-based teaching and supervision in social studies at BA and MA level. In addition to research and research-based teaching, the position also involves sharing knowledge with the rest of society – including participation in the public debate. Furthermore, the professor is expected to attract research grants, manage research projects, provide guidance and supervision of PhD students and assistant professors, take a leading role in research groups and development of new teaching activities, and actively engage in external fundraising and other activities to increase funds for the Department as well as take active part in academic assessments and other tasks requested by the Department.

The ideal candidate is expected to:

  • Have established him/herself as a prominent scholar in his/her field
  • Accomplish research and engage in research cooperation meeting high international standards
  • Show academic leadership by developing and managing core educational and research related tasks
  • Actively contribute to boost the international recognition of the research of the Department,
  • Actively engage in large-scale external fundraising to increase funds for PhDs, post docs etc. at the Department,
  • Actively participate in research management (including initiating and leading research projects/programmes),
  • Play an active role in developing the educational programmes of the Department,
  • Actively contribute to the administrative responsibilities of the Department and to RUC-wide tasks,
  • Actively participate in the Department’s communication with the broader public,
  • Take leading responsibility for the long-term well-being of the department and RUC at large
  • Actively contribute to the research environment by a visible and physical presence at ISE, and
  • Promote RUC’s academic reputation.

Qualifications
Applicants must hold a relevant PhD degree. The ideal candidate matches most of the following characteristics:

  • Consolidated international research profile within social studies with a particular focus on childhood and youth or care and gender
  • Consolidated teaching experience within the field of social studies
  • Demonstrated ability to attract external research funding, and
  • A keen interest and experience in project-based teaching and teaching in an interdisciplinary environment.

Moreover, the ideal candidate shall be enterprising and possess good communication skills, and be a visible involved participant in the department’s daily activities, in addition to being willing to engage in disciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration across the department.

Assessment
In the assessment of the candidates, consideration will be given to:

  • Research topic(s)
  • Original scientific production at a high international level
  • Experience in teaching and education development and management
  • Experience in successfully supervising PhD candidates
  • Proven ability to attract external funds for research
  • The ability to promote and utilise research results
  • The ability to contribute to development of the department’s internal and external cooperation

Terms of employment
The employment is full time and you will refer to Head of Department Peter Kragelund

The position will be filled according to the Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) and Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities.

Commencing salary will be minimum DKK 612.387 per year (1st april 2018 level) plus pension contribution (17,1 %).

After the deadline for applications the Head of Department will shortlist applicants for assessment with assistance from the recruitment committee including the chairperson of the assessment committee.

Shortly after the application deadline all applicants will be notified whether or not their application has been selected for assessment.

The shortlisted applicants will be informed about the composition of the assessment committee, and each applicant will be given the opportunity to comment on the composition of the committee and - later on - their assessment.

Once the recruitment process is completed, all applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application.
