Research Centre for Problem-oriented Project Learning, RUC-PPL, and the Department of People and Technology, Roskilde University, invite applications for a PhD project on problem-oriented project learning, commencing January 1, 2019 or soon thereafter. The position is 3 years fixed-term (see AC-overenskomsten).

General description of the PhD project aims
The title for the PhD project is: Problem-oriented project learning (PPL) in a contemporary educational philosophy and learning theoretical perspective.

PPL was developed as a pedagogical approach at Roskilde University in the early 1970s. The approach can be considered a composite pedagogy, which brings together various educational philosophies and learning theories. This philosophical and theoretical backdrop was not always explicit in the foundational texts. The aim of this project is to untangle the philosophical and theoretical roots of PPL and relate the approach to contemporary questions and problems in educational philosophy, learning theory and university pedagogy,

The Doctoral School
You will be enrolled as a PhD student in the Doctoral School of People and Technology in the PhD programme Learning, Working life and Social innovation, see

You will be part of the Research Centre for Problem-oriented Project Learning, where you will be located and undertake your day-to-day activities, see

Responsibilities and tasks
The PhD position is an educational position and the main tasks in the position are defined as follows in accordance with the Executive Order on the PhD programme at universities and certain artistic educational institutions (PhD Executive Order), currently Executive Order no. 1039 of 27/08/2013:

• Implementation of an independent research project under supervision (the PhD project)

• Completing PhD courses or other similar educational elements comprising the equivalent of approx. 30 ECTS credits.

• Participation in active research environments, including stays at other, primarily foreign, research institutions, private research companies, etc.

• Obtaining experience with teaching activities or other forms of knowledge dissemination related to the PhD project in question.

• Preparation of a PhD thesis based on the PhD project.

You must hold a Master’s Degree or equivalent within pedagogy, educational studies or other relevant field. You need to document qualifications within:

  • Educational philosophy and/or learning theory
  • Document analysis

Desirable qualifications include

  • Experience with problem-based learning
  • Ability to read Danish (as PPL foundational texts are in Danish)

In addition, we expect you to be able to work independently, that you are proactive and have good collaborative skills. We expect you to partake in the daily life and activities of the centre.

  • Educational background and other professional qualifications
  • Grades in the Master’s programme or equivalent
  • Quality and relevance of the project proposal
    • In your project proposal you need to outline your consideration of the overall project aims as described above, which questions you find most relevant and interesting and how you might approach them.
    • The project proposal should not exceed 5 pages
  • Relevance of the project for RUC-PPL
  • Qualifications and experiences related to being able to successfully complete a major project

Terms of employment
This is a full-time position, reporting to the head of department, Anders Siig Andersen.

The position will be filled according to the Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) and Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities.

After the deadline for applications the Head of Department will shortlist applicants for assessment with assistance from the recruitment committee including the chairperson of the assessment committee.

Shortly after the application deadline all applicants will be notified whether or not their application has been selected for assessment.

The shortlisted applicants will be informed about the composition of the assessment committee, and each applicant will be given the opportunity to comment on the composition of the committee and - later on - their assessment.

Once the recruitment process is completed, all applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application.
