Department of Social Science and Business, Roskilde University, invites applications for a position as PhD of Sociology of European Integration from February 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position as PhD is limited to a period of 3 years. The candidate will be based in Roskilde University and will be expected to conduct field work in Europe and participate in a research stay abroad.

The PhD-scholarship is a part of an ongoing project about the relations between European Integration and the social science (2018-2022). The project is funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark’s Sapere Aude program.

Description of the PhD project
Whit this PhD project we are looking for a project that broadly addresses questions such as: How do social scientists produce social scientific knowledge in European research projects? And how is the relation between social science knowledge production and European political institutions negotiated?

The project we are looking for should address should address these question through case studies of a number of selected European social science projects, preferably using a theoretically informed qualitative appraoch. Thus, the project could address questions such as how social scientists negotiate and struggle over epistemological criteria’s and social organization, how the relationship between the social scientists and the European political institutions is negotiated and with which consequences for the social and cognitive structure for European social science knowledge production.

The project is a part of larger overarching project analyzing contemporary changes in institution and cognitive structures of social science research in Europe and how these changes entangles with political integration in Europe. In the last three decades we have seen an increasing Europeanisation of the social science. More social scientists collaborate with European colleagues, publish in international outlets and engage in foreign academic literature. Simultaneously, academic institutions have been built in Europe and funding from European sources becomes increasing important. All in all, it seems that the social science’s historical close entanglement with the nation state is challenged or at least under change. The project is analyzing these changes in order to understand how the social scientific knowledge production is reconfigured at a European level.
