Head of Fuel Supply Planning

Maersk Group - A.P. Møller Mærsk

Maersk Energy Markets acts as the sourcing arm for Maersk in terms of supply, storage, purchase and delivery of fuel and energy. The department handled approximately 11m metric tons of fuel purchases during 2023 including green fuels such as biofuel and methanol. With fuel being one of Maersk´s main operating costs, Energy Markets focuses on optimizing it along various channels, including blending, tolling and barging. We are a mixture of talented, passionate professionals, traders and industry experts part of a larger organization all working reach Maersk´s net-zero target by 2040.

The Fuel Supply Planning team is both technical in IT and mathematics, as well as operational ensuring cutting-edge optimization tools are connected to the physical world so that every Maersk vessel knows when and where to refuel most optimally.

Your Role

You will lead the Fuel Supply Planning team and be an integral part of Energy Markets organization, responsible for optimizing the overall fuel planning for the Maersk Ocean fleet. This entails taking ownership of the end-to-end optimization process all the way from the demand-side of forecasting which fuels grades to purchase when and where, as well as the supply-side informing Maersk Ocean vessels when and where to refuel.

Working closely with stakeholders across the business, you will apply program management principles to drive multiple improvement projects across the finish line. Regulations around green fuels are constantly changing, and you will have the exciting opportunity to fuse these overlapping drivers into our optimization logic in the smartest possible way.

What We Offer

  • An exciting leadership position based in Copenhagen.
  • The chance to join a department actively working to decarbonize shipping ensuring Maersk reaches it´s net-zero target by 2040.
  • Opportunities and freedom to explore where else in Energy Markets we can benefit from utilizing mathematical optimization.
  • A broad network of stakeholders within Maersk all working together to solve complex and intellectually challenging problems.

Key Responsibilities

Your main focus will be to lead the team working on maintaining the day-to-day fuel supply optimization whilst also developing and enhancing our optimization capabilities to account for future green fuel regulatory changes.

Central to the team's work is an optimization algorithm called Bunker Optimization Planning System (BOPS), based on a Mixed Integer Problem minimizing the overall fuel cost while adhering to several constraints.

Key tasks;

  • Manage and drive the maintenance and development BOPS including:
    • Upstream and downstream development – Utilize BOPS optimization logic to further optimize the end-to-end Fuel Supply Planning process from demand forecasting through to barge scheduling.
    • Automation – Expand on current capabilities with an automation mindset of reducing redundant tasks.
    • Optimization Integrity – Enhance the overall group of processes surrounding BOPS to ensure a robust system with high integrity.
  • Green fuel adoption – Ensure new rules and regulations related to emissions are included in BOPS optimization logic and that green fuel supply planning is seen as a non-event.
  • Supply Planning - Lead supply planning initiatives to ensure bunker plans for all Maersk Ocean vessels are realistic, executable and at lowest possible cost.
  • Drive stakeholder engagement and secure alignment – Specifically with teams involved in both demand and supply planning across the APMM organization.
  • Bunker Simulations – Own ad-hoc bunker simulations to understand impact of macro/micro shocks, for example: immediate sanctions of certain oil products, new SECA zone implementations etc.
  • Industry knowledge – Understand the entire bunker process flow, from planning through to bunkering. Keep up to date with competitor capabilities ensuring we maintain our edge.
  • Lead a team of senior professionals – Creating the right structure, mapping the necessary skills and attracting and developing the talents needed to position the function as best in class in the industry.
  • Commercial exploration – Continuously evaluate business cases to enhance our overall Fuel Supply capabilities and scale these in line with growing complexity.
  • Collaboration – Foster collaboration with other like-minded departments within Maersk to ensure overall tech capabilities are fully utilized.

Who We Are Looking For

  • Tertiary Qualification – strong technical background with a masters or PhD in related studies.
  • Significant professional experience working closely with algorithms and optimization tools.
  • Direct experience working with system integration and program management needed for driving multiple improvement projects.
  • An energetic, pro-active, commercially minded leader who is familiar with operating in a fast-paced environment and enjoys solving complex technical challenges.
  • The ability to connect the dots between immediate action and bottom-line impact whilst maintaining an expert understanding of regulatory landscapes.
  • Someone who can transform a complicated message into a simple one with a proven track record of maintaining high team engagement.
  • Fluent in both written and spoken English.
